Rites Held for Donald R. Hays
Donald R. “Snowball” Hays, 62, a longtime resident of Colfax, died Tuesday, March 15, at the Des Moines General Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 18, at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.
The Rev. John McKinstry, pastor of the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax, conducted services. Burial was in Ashton Chapel Cemetery, west of Baxter.
Soloist was Walter Williams and organist was Mrs. Frank B. Evans.
Casket bearers were Richard Smith, Delbert Shepley, Herb Annis, Dick Swanson, Wayne Hill, and Jim Thomas.
The flower committee was Mrs. Richard Smith and Mrs. Shirley Renfro.
Graveside military rites were held by Jones-Willis Post 175 of the American Legion of Colfax.
Survivors are his wife, Marjorie, a daughter, Mrs. Darrell (Sandra) Henning of Colfax, and three grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Harry Hays of Farrar; and two sisters, Pansy Munson of Cambridge and Emma Meyers of Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Hays, an Army veteran of World War II and an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, was a member of the Colfax American Legion Post and United Auto Workers, Local 997.
He was employed at the Maytag Co. in Newton for 30 years before his retirement. The son of Charles and O’Lettie Borts Hays, he was born Sept. 5, 1920 in Spooner, Wis. He was a graduate of Mingo Community High School.
He was married to Marjorie Gibson, June 22, 1957 in Nevada.
