Harriet L. (Pentico) Eichner, 89, of Newton died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, in the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 21, at the funeral home. A private family burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Jasper County Historical Museum. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
Harriet is survived by her daughter, Marty Ford of Newton; two grandchildren, Matthew M. (Jennifer) Ford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jane (Brian) Grannan of Columbus, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Madison and Jackson; a brother, Maurice (Pauline) Pentico of Pharr, Texas; a sister, Audrey Gilles of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews and her special friends, Jim and Trudy Verwers and Rhonda Carmichael.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carroll “Ike,” in 1989; a brother, Mervin Pentico; and special friends, Wayne and Freda Weideman.
The daughter of Earl L. and Hanna (Gunsaulus) Pentico, Harriet was born March 18, 1921, in Newton, Iowa. She was a 1939 graduate of Newton Senior High School. On Jan. 28, 1943, Harriet was united in marriage to Carroll William “Ike” Eichner in Lancaster, Mo.
Harriet was a retired post-master of the U.S.P.S. in Killduff, Iowa, where she had worked for 30 years. She also was the co-owner of Fleck Hatchery for several years. Harriet also had been the state editor of the National Association of Postmasters for six years.
Harriet was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Killduff and Newton. She was also a member of the Newton Women of the Moose Lodge No. 923 and the Richland Grange in Killduff. She was a past 4-H Leader for the Buena Vista Doers for many years.
Harriet enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and playing cards. She volunteered for many years at the Jasper County Historical Museum, Skiff Medical Center’s surgical center waiting room and with many other organizations. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in Newton and Killduff.
