LaVonne May Behrens, 80, formerly of Colfax, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Holden Manor Care Center in Holden, Mo.
The daughter of Arthur A. and Alta M. (Martin) Kullman, LaVonne was born March 30, 1930, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1948. On Aug. 26, 1954, LaVonne was united in marriage with Edwin C. Behrens in Carroll, Iowa, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 2005. In 1964, Ed and LaVonne moved to Colfax, where they lived for 40 years and raised their five children.
LaVonne proudly served the Colfax-Mingo School District for more than 28 years as the secretary to the Colfax-Mingo Board of Education until her retirement in 1996, and she then was elected to the school board of directors. She was a member of the P.E.O., Colfax United Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Circle of the United Methodist Women.
Those left to honor her memory are her children, Chris (Marla) Behrens of California, Md.; Jane Behrens (John Pedraza) of Gladstone, Mo., Marc (Lisa) Behrens of Olathe, Kan., Sheila (Bob) Palczewski of Defiance, Ohio, and Paula (Scotty) Walker of Holden, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
LaVonne was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Richard Kullman and Douglas Kullman.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the Colfax United Methodist Church. A private interment will take place later at the Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, June 14, at the Coburn Funeral Home of Colfax from 2 to 8 p.m., with family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Colfax-Mingo Dollars for Scholars or the Colfax United Methodist Church.
