V. Dean Hammer, 82, of Newton died Monday, May 24, 2010, at his home in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor David Rex of Metz Church in rural Newton officiating. A celebration of life and a bluegrass jam session (please bring your instruments) will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Metz Church, Jasper County Senior Citizens or the Jasper County Hospice may be left at the funeral home.
The son of V. J. and Mary Lola Irene (Hinshaw) Hammer, he was born March 15, 1928, in Amboy in Jasper County, Iowa. On Oct. 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Margaret J. Willemsen in Monroe, Iowa.
He was a factory maintenance worker for the Winpower Company for 38 years, retiring in 1990, and was a member of the Metz Church, UAW Local 997, Jasper County Farm Bureau, S.P.G.M.A., Blue Grass Gospel Music Inc., former member of the Newton Amateur Radio Club (KØJZG), the Jasper County, Kellogg and Williamson Historical Societies, and was a Jasper County Senior Citizen Board Member. He loved to play and listen to bluegrass music and was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in Newton and the Kellogg areas.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Newton; three sons, Dennis (Bobbie) Hammer of Newton, Jerry (Carol) Hammer of Newton and Douglas (Karan) Hammer of Newton; a daughter, Deborah (Douglas) Durant of Baxter; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carroll Hammer and Terry Hammer, both of Newton; a sister, Helen Etter of Newton; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marion and Wanda Willemsen of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
