Charles W. Hammer, 96, of Newton died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Newton Union Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the funeral home. Memorials in Charlie’s name may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton, which is handling arrangements.
The son of Jesse M. and Ethel B. (Trafton) Hammer, Charles was born June 25, 1913, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1932, and on Sept. 21, 1982, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Hoffman at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa.
Charlie served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed reading westerns; playing pitch, poker and bingo; and gardening. He was also a very good cook and made sure all county graves were decorated for Memorial Day.
Charlie was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Russell, Jasper County Farm Bureau, American Legion Post 111 and the DAV. He was a lifelong farmer and also had worked at Hough Local Grocery store and at Parsons. He was a longtime Jasper County resident, living in the Baxter area and in Newton. He also had lived in Oregon from 1935 to 1939 and in Russell from 1963 to 1975.
Survivors include three sons, Mark (Elaine) Hammer of Baxter, Keith (Rita) Hammer of Bettendorf and Charles W. Wallway of Newton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Mary L. Hammer Rohr, mother of Keith and Mark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Esther in 1946 and Mary Jane in 2003; and a daughter, Linda L. Hammer.
