Dale was the youngest of nine children and was born on the family farm five miles east of Monroe on Sept. 3, 1920. In his high school years, he played the center in basketball and graduated from Monroe High School in 1939.
Dale met the sweetheart of his life, Reva Marshall, and talked her into marrying him on Feb. 26, 1948. Two rowdy boys and two delightful daughters soon followed: Gary (Ruth) of Ankeny, Elaine (John) Kouri of Urbandale, Alan (Theresa) of Urbandale and baby Sheryl (Mike) Lubberden of Pella. Grandpa Mac was dearly loved by his grandchildren: Andrea and Luke; Zach, Erin and Adam; Jessie, Mark, and Alex; Emily and Will.
Dale was a longtime member of Tool’s Chapel east of Monroe until it closed. He and Reva then became active members of the Monroe United Methodist Church. Through the years he taught Sunday School, and served as a trustee. Dale enjoyed outdoor jobs; he farmed, worked for PAG and for Jasper County in road maintenance. He served as clerk of Fairview Township for many years, where he frequently mediated fence disputes. Dale especially enjoyed vegetable gardening and raised his own popcorn for Sunday popcorn night. He also cranked many freezers of homemade ice cream. His favorite flavors were lemon and pineapple.
