Harold E. Halter, 88, of Newton died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, at the First Christian Church, 314 E. Second St. N. in Newton with Pastor Mark Young officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials may be left to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Jasper County Honor Flight and may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.
The son of Leopold and Matilda (Bach) Halter, Harold was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Baxter, Iowa. He graduated from Baxter High School in 1940. On May 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Doran in Des Moines, Iowa.
Harold was a production worker at the Maytag Company in Newton for 38½ years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon; the Baxter School Board; the VFW Post 1655; and American Legion Post 111.
Harold enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and sports, and he just loved being outside. He lived in Baxter until moving to Newton in 1973.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Newton; a grandson, Chad Halter of Newton; two brothers, Lawrence (Cora) Halter of Baxter and Wilbur (Jean) Halter of Newton; a sister, Shirley Brown of Newton; a sister-in-law, Helen Halter of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Judy (Jeff) Conn of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bruce Halter; a grandson, Scott Halter; a sister, Lucile Halter; a brother and sister-in-law, Lewis (Lois) Halter; and a brother, Robert Halter.
