George L. Kling, 87, of Newton died Sunday, April 25, 2010, at his home in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 28, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the Newton Union Cemetery with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. Family and friends will gather at the American Legion, 1101 W. Fourth St. S. in Newton, immediately following the graveside service.
Memorials in George’s name may be left to the Jasper County Honor Flight. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Louis Henry and Bertha S. (Brooks) Kling, George was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Kellogg, Iowa. George graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1939. He also graduated from Iowa State University in 1946 with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
George served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a 1st lieutenant and B-17 pilot. George flew as a part of the 2nd Bomb Group, 49th Bomb Squadron. He was a farmer and a commodities broker, retiring in 2005, and was a member of the Newton Elks Club, American Legion Post 111, VFW Post 1655 and the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. George was a lifelong resident of Jasper County living in Kellogg and Newton.
Survivors include his daughter, Shannon Spellman of Glendale, Ariz.; a grandson, Chase Caudle of Merritt Island, Fla.; a great-granddaughter, Sloan Caudle of Merritt Island, Fla.; three sisters, Florence Smith of Tucson, Ariz., Mary Powell of Mason City, Iowa, and Dorothy Pearson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Lauren, in 2005; a sister, Grace Meredith; and a brother, Henry Kling.
