A funeral service for Denny Lee Downing, 35, was held on April 2, 2010, at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer, Iowa.
Denny was born June 18, 1974, in Newton, Iowa, the son of Clifford (Stan) Downing and Cheryl McCumber Downing. Denny passed away March 28, 2010, at his home in What Cheer.
He was a 1993 graduate of Tri-County High School, where he excelled in cross country, track and football. During high school, Denny was a junior janitorial assistant and had a Des Moines Register paper route. In the summer during high school, Denny worked for his Grandpa Jones. Following graduation, he worked for Bender Fountry Service Inc. and later worked for Douds Stone Inc., where he was a foreman.
On May 14, 2000, Denny married Teresa Van Patten. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on his cars, remodeling his house and had a soft spot in his heart for his cats. Denny was an Iowa Hawkeye football fan and for the past six years had purchased season tickets to attend the games with his family and friends.
Denny was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Fred McCumber Sr., Andrew Armstrong, Cliffford L. Downing and Chester Jones, and an infant brother, Michael Shane Downing.
Denny is survived by his parents, Michael and Cheryl Armstrong of What Cheer; his father, Clifford S. Downing of Kellogg; his siblings, Jennifer (Jacob) Rysdam Pavlovec of Johnston, Michelle Armstrong and Michael Armstong Jr. of What Cheer, Jason Downing of Enterprise, Kan., and Justin Downing of Wichita, Kan.; and his companion, Valerie Miller, and her two sons, Derek and Nicholas. Denny also leaves behind his grandmothers, Irene McCumber of Newton, Ardith Armstrong of Oskaloosa and Jolene Jones of Grinnell. He also was blessed with his niece, Gwendolyn Pavlovec, and numerous other relatives and friends.
