Bette R. Sickle, 86, of Newton died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. John M. Moore of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends with a coffee time from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton. Memorials in Bette’s name may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Omar H. and Iva (Hipsley) Hummel, Bette was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Monroe, Iowa. She graduated from Newton Senior High School, and on Jan. 6, 1951, Bette was united in marriage to George Sickle in Des Moines, Iowa.
Bette worked as a secretary for the Jasper County Soil and Water Conservation District until 1981. She also worked many years for Newton Furniture.
Bette was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Newton. She loved her family and enjoyed playing cards, canning, making Chex Mix at Christmas time, and people loved her homemade salsa and pickled beets. Bette was a lifelong resident of Newton.
She is survived by her husband, George of Newton; two sons, Wayne (Donna) Northcutt of Newton and Rick Northcutt of Newton; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy Hummel of Newton; and two sisters, Peggy Pinder of Newton and Pat Withers of Colfax.
Bette was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Buddy, in infancy; and three sisters, Edith Hale, Ida Rentsch and Bonnie Auten.
