John L. Ervin, 77, of the Iowa Veterans Home died Wednesday, March 31, 2010.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Cincinnati United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, with a visitation from 12:30 p.m. until service time. He will be laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati, Iowa. Visitation will be Monday, April 5, 2010, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. John Lloyd Ervin was born on Nov. 8, 1932, in Cincinnati, Appanoose County, Iowa. He was the son of David Benjamin and Lena (Besse) Ervin. He graduated from Cincinnati High School. John served our country honorably in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. On July 19, 1986, John married Mary Gumtau in Marshalltown. The couple has lived in Marshalltown for their entire married life.
John was employed at Winpower Corporation in Newton, Iowa. He then worked at M. Gervich and Sons for 10 years. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, enjoyed fishing, reading, word search puzzles, playing poker and camping.
He will be missed by his wife, Mary of Marshalltown; his nine, stepchildren, Donna Carrick of Marshalltown, Dave (Brenda) Kane of Bettendorf, Tom Kane of Marshalltown, Vicki Carradus of Davenport, Rick (Connie) Kane of Colona, Ill., Steve (Becky) Kane of Bettendorf, Pat (Homer) Moore of Odessa, Texas, Debbie (Mark) Albee of Marshalltown and Sue (Trent) Kiersey of State Center; his 34 grandchildren; his 39 great-grandchildren; his one great-great-grandchild; his sisters, Roberta Glovas and Louise (Bob) Ritter, both of Cincinnati; and his nephews and nieces.
In death he has rejoined his step-daughter, Sheila Scott, who died in 1986; his twin brother, James; and his brothers, Eugene Ervin and Albert (Swede) Ervin.
