Vern E. Schlangen, 56, of Newton died Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 5, at the Wallace Family Funeral H o m e in Newton. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery Veterans II Section.
Memorials in Vern’s name may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Raymond and Irene (Hammerding) Schlangen, Vern was born June 6, 1953, on the family farm in Richmond, Minn. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam. On Aug. 12, 1978, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Good in Newton.
Vern liked working with his hands and helping people out. He also enjoyed fishing and bowling and was on a bowling league in St. Cloud. Vern and Carolyn had resided in the Jasper County area prior to moving to St. Cloud, Minn., from 1995 to 2007. In 2007, they moved back to Newton.
For the last few years, Vern had been a landlord, owning multiple rental properties. For many years, he was a farmer and also had done some truck driving and construction work.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Schlangen of Newton; two sons, Ked Weithers (Judy Johnson) of Newton and Shawn (Alicia) Weithers of Newton; one daughter, Sandra Weithers of Newton; his grandchildren, Ashley, Amy, Amber, Brittney, T.J., Sarah, Rebekah, Kaylee, Jakob, Joshua, Jonathan, Laura, Jason, Jonah, Olivia, Sophie, Brooke and Ridge; his great-grandchildren, Derek, Colby and Bam; his mother, Irene Schlangen of Richmond, Minn.; his brothers and sisters, Donna Zierden, Eldy Schlangen, Pat (Marlys) Schlangen, Ken (Laura) Schlangen, Rose Schlangen, Alan (Suzanne) Schlangen, Julie (Dave) Norduick, Dale (Janelle) Schlangen and Sharon (Jim) Opatz; his brother-in-law, Ben Witte; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Schlangen; a son, Ronald Weithers; a sister, Bernie Witte; and brother-in-law, Don Zierden.
