Marvin D. Crandell, 91, of Newton died Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Elder April Franksain officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in the veterans section. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Legion High School Nursing Scholarship may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Lewis and Margaret (Cline) Crandell, Marvin was born Aug. 21, 1918, in Boone, Iowa. In November 1938, he was united in marriage to Arlyne Olson.
Marvin served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and he was a self-employed mechanic and electrician, retiring in 2000. He was united in marriage to Wilma Richtsmeier in October 1972.
Marvin was a member of the VFW Post 1655, Cooties, American Legion Post 111, 40&8, Last Man’s Club and the Elks Lodge. He served as Newton Cootie Commander, two-time State Cootie Commander, VFW 5th District Commander, VFW 5th District Quartermaster, Newton VFW Commander and Newton American Legion Commander. He had lived in Newton since 1938.
Survivors include two sons, Jim (Chris) Crandell of Newton and Jack Crandell of Newton; one grandchild, Jim (Jes) Crandell Jr. of Forest Lake, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emma, Caeden, Elliana and Ava Crandell; four nephews, Tony (Sandra) Crandell, Allan (Linda) Crandell, David (Barb) Crandell and John Crandell; two nieces, April (Roger) Franksain and Marvia (Jose) Garrido; and two step-sons, Jim and Dick Richtsmeier their spouses and families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Arlyne, in 1970; second wife, Wilma, in 1994; a brother; two nephews; two nieces; and two step-sons.
