Vaundeen M. (Pack) Kastner, 86, of Newton died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 19, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father William Reynolds officiating. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service.
The daughter of George and Neva (McConnell) Pack, Vaundeen was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Creston, Iowa. Vaundeen was a graduate of Osceola High School in 1984. On March 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to Ernest “Ernie” Kastner in Wichita, Kan.
For 18 years, she was a waitress at Mason’s Café, retiring from there in 1974. She then cooked congregate meals for 15 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1947-2010), St. Francis Circle of the Sacred Heart Society and the Parent Teacher’s Association.
Her most important thing was her family. She was a very generous person and always was taking care of people. Vaundeen enjoyed feeding and watching birds and had a collection of angels. Vaundeen had lived in Newton for 63 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Helen Richard of Newton; two sons, Don (Shirley) Kastner of Blaine, Minn., and James (Annetta) Kastner of Newton; eight grandchildren, Eric Richard of Mankato, Minn., Amatullah Richard of Monticello, Iowa, Tony Kastner of Blaine, Minn., Tracy (Josh) Stai of Kalona, Iowa, DJ Kastner of Newton, Gwendolyn Bennett of Hinesville, Ga., Connie Bennett of Evansville, Ind., and Broderick Miller of Marion, Ill.; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald (Mabel) Pack of Wichita, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest “Ernie” Kastner, in 2009; and her sisters, Ilene DeVore and Lucille Pack.
