Walters, Travis DeVere Sr – 1912-2010

PRAIRIE CITY — Travis DeVere Walters Sr., 97, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at the Bright Kavanagh Hospice.
The visitation and funeral were this morning at the Christian Church of Prairie City. Interment was at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. Memorials may be made in his name to ZaGaZig Shriners Children’s Hospital, and online condolences may be sent to caldwellraddatz.com.
Mr. Walters was born on Dec. 23, 1912, in Table Grove, Ill., to Olidene (Weese) and Ernest P. Walters. He was a graduate of Prairie City High School, attended Drake University and graduated from Hohenschuh-Carpenter Mortuary College of Des Moines. He married Kathryn Ione Bowen on Oct. 11, 1932, in Princeton, Mo., and she preceded him in death on May 11, 1999. They lived in Iowa since 1928, and he owned and operated his funeral business in Colfax, Prairie City and Monroe for more than 50 years. Travis also operated a furniture store and was a commercial property broker.
Travis served on the Prairie City Council for 12 years, was a member of the Christian Church of Prairie City, the Masonic Lodge, ZaGaZig Shrine and a 75-year member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his son, Travis D. (JoAnn) Walters Jr. of Anamosa, Iowa; his daughter, Mary (Gary) Cozad of Clive, Iowa; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a dear family friend, Anna Vande Kieft of Prairie City. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Anita Adair and Virginia Chambliss; and a grandson, Vernon Walters.
