Helen was born in Jasper County near Monroe on December 6, 1921 to Bert and Ethel Roberts Robison. She attended country school and graduated from Monroe High School in 1939. She then went to Central College to receive her teaching certificate and taught rural school.
Helen worked at the Maytag Plant in Newton during WWII and later worked at a restaurant near Pleasantville where she met her husband Lester Powell. Helen also worked at the Pleasant Care Nursing Home for many years.
Helen married Lester in February of 1952 and were blessed with three children: Gary, Randy, and Denise. She loved her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her grandchildren remember going to grandma’s and experiencing farm life and fishing. She had the talent of playing the piano without being able to read music. At family dinners there was always pressed chicken, apple salad, macaroni & cheese, and angel food cake. She liked listening to country music and always kept track of her favorite performer George Strait.
She was an independent and hardworking woman, still living at home on the same farm since 1952. She always kept her driver’s license and even still kept some cattle and sheep on the farm. She was known for her love of all animals. Helen was a true farmer.
