Death of Tracy Swearingen

It was indeed sad news to a wide circle of Jasper County friends, when the telegram told them of the death of Tracy Swearingen at his home in Madison Lake, Minnesota, on Wednesday, May 15th. It was known for some time that he was seriously ill, yet they clung to the very faint hope that he might yet be spared to his wife, family and friends. His brother frank of Killduff and his wife’s uncle, Prof. Gilman Drew, of Woodshole, Mass., were with him at the time of his death and accompanied the widow and other friends with the body to Newton, arriving on Friday evening, being joined at Grinnell, by Prof. Will Drew, of Ithaca, N. Y. The remains were taken to the home of his cousins, Misses Kate and Sue blazer, on East McDonald. Funeral services were held at the cemetery at 10:30 Saturday morning, conducted by Rev. E. F. Leake of this city, and Rev. Edwards of Mankato, Minn., a large number of old friends being in attendance. Among those from a distance were S. J. Oldfield, J. W. McCurnin, Mrs. Dr. Hibbs and Mrs. Pearson from Mitchellville; Robert Ball and his two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Caldwell and Miss Nellie Ball of Altoona.

George Tracy Swearingen was born in McDonough Co., Illinois, Sept. 8, 1874. He came with his parents to Jasper County the spring of 1877, settling in Buena Vista Township. In December 1895 he was united in marriage with Miss Ethel Cook in this city. Soon afterward they moved to Mitchellville where he was engaged in banking until about ten years ago, when they went to Madison Lake, and he became associated with the People’s State Bank at that place. Beside his widow, he leaves two children, Harold and Mildred, and one brother, Frank Swearingen of Killduff.

Tracy was not yet 38 years of age at the time of his death-a young man, very successful and with a bright future before him. He was an honorable, conscientious and upright man, who had the confidence and friendship of all who have ever known him. ~ Newspaper unknown.
