Death of Dan H. Spencer

Daniel H. Spencer died at his home on East 4 1/2 Street South, on Monday evening, June 17th, his spirit taking its flight just as the great clock was tolling the hour of 6. On the 5th of April he had a stroke of paralysis, from which in his already enfeebled condition, he never fully recovered. A second stroke came on Monday morning, which terminated in his death at the close of the day.

He was a native of Indiana, where he was born 79 years ago on the 28th of March. He came to Indianola, this state, in 1959, where he was married to Miss Rebecca Farson, who died nearly 14 years ago. To them were born 5 children-Henry and Atwell Spencer of Newton, Charles Spencer of Cherokee, Mrs. Lennie Mitchell of Valley Junction and Mrs. Ida Howard of this city.

September 29, 1901, Mr. Spencer was married to Mrs. Rose Rexroat Luke, who has been a most devoted wife, caring for him tenderly during the years he was been an invalid, unable to work and much of the time practically helpless. Although not a member of any denomination, Mr. Spencer was a christian, and was ready when the great summons came. He was a good man and if he had any enemies, we never knew of them, during the 30 years he had lived in Newton.

Funeral services were held at the home this Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. F. Leake of the Christian Church. The pallbearers were Messrs. O. N. Wagley, H. H. Phillips, Geo. G. Early, P. R. Rice, Noble Fugard, George Hart. ~ Newspaper unknown.

Transcriber note: birth and death dates from the Newton Union Cemetery List.
