Harriet Evelyn Hafkey, 89, of Grinnell died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell.
She is survived by a sister, Marjorie Hatfield of Exline.

Harriet Hafkey, 89, of Grinnell, died on January 21, 2010, at Grace Living Center in Norman, Oklahoma. A prayer service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, at the Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery, north of Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until service time Saturday morning February 6, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Poweshiek Animal League (PALS).
The daughter of George W. and Lettie Brownilie Berry, Harriet was born July 24, 1920, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1938 graduate of Grinnell High School. On December 3, 1938, she was united in marriage to Orville K. Hafkey in Oskaloosa. The couple lived on the family farm in Chester Township, which is now in its 5th generation in the Hafkey family. She was a homemaker and took great pride in managing everything in her home and raising her family. She was a member of the Chester Township Ladies Aid and the Friendly Folks Club. Harriet enjoyed entertaining her family at the family farm and her kitchen was very well used by all who visited. She loved to cook, usually 3 meals a day and often delivering food to the workers in the field. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and solving word search puzzles.
Survivors include two children, Marianne Huennekens of Noble, Oklahoma and George (Beth) Hafkey of Grinnell; two brothers, George Berry of Modesto, California and Gene Berry of Malcom; one sister, Marjory Hatfield of Exline; seven grandchildren, Kelly Birkenholtz, Kristy Buchanan, Beth, Chad, Mark and Mike Hafkey, and Kathy Thomas; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one son, Richard Louis Hafkey.
