Mrs. Henry J. Snodgrass

Formerly of Jasper County, Died at Her Home in Delta

News of the death of Mrs. Henry J. Snodgrass, which occurred March 28, at her home in Delta, Keokuk County, carried sorrow to the hearts of hosts of people in Jasper County, where most of her life was spent. The following obituary, read at the funeral, is taken from the Delta paper:

Mary Jane Cating was born in Warren County, Indiana, April 16th, 1842. With her parents she removed to Galesburg, Iowa, in 1856, which vicinity was her home until ten years ago.

She was married to Henry J. Snodgrass on September 8, 1859, at Galesburg, and for nearly fifty-five years they traveled together the journey of life. To this happy and God-blessed union sixteen children were given, three of these dying in infancy and one son, Arthur M., died at about sixteen years of age.

The remaining twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, together with the husband and father, survive and mourn the loss of their mother and companion in life.

They are: O. E. and H. C. of Interior, S.D.; H. M. of Kimball, S. D.; I. E. of Keswick; J.C. of Des Moines; Mrs. Dora Howell, of Newton; Mrs. Eva Swisher, of Sully; Mrs. Ethel Ferguson, Mrs. Lura Paterson and Bessie Jarnagin, all of Delta. Besides these she is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. J. Butin of Des Moines, twenty-eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Mrs. Snodgrass obeyed the gospel under the preaching of Elder Joshua Swallow, and was baptized January 24, 1859, being the first person baptized in the Christian church at Galesburg, Iowa.

Ten years ago brother and sister Snodgrass came to Delta where they have since resided and have endeared themselves to their many friends and acquaintances by their upright conversation and cordial sympathetic interest in church and community affairs.

Although in failing health for years the last and fatal illness of Sister Snodgrass was of short duration, and after all that medical skill and loving care could do to restore her to health, she passed quietly away on Saturday morning, March 28, 1914, surrounded by nearly all of her immediate family, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 12 days.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church at 2 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. M. Elam, pastor. Six sons of the deceased acted as pall bearers. Interment was made in the Springfield Cemetery. ~ Newspaper unknown.
