COLFAX - Charles Griffith Lewis, 75, of Colfax, went home Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, from Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services for Charlie will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Howard Street Christian Church of Colfax with burial following at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday at Coburn Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the Charles Lewis Memorial Fund and online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of William J. and Kathryn (Logan) Lewis, Charles was born on May 29, 1934 in Colfax. Charlie proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in Puerto Rico during the Korean War.
On July 1, 1954 Charlie was united in marriage with Francis Eleanor Welch at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax. Charlie was quite the collector. He collected Coca-Cola memorabilia, knives, guns, belt buckles, old tractors, and the list keeps going.
Charlie also had a love for fishing, hunting, camping, and being a gunsmith. He enjoyed being involved with his children’s activities and spending time with family. Charlie owned the Texaco Station in Colfax and was a welder at EFCO. He was a member of the North American Fishing Club, North American Hunting Club, and the American Legion.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 55 years, Eleanor Lewis of Colfax; children, Donald Lewis and his wife Dalena of Colfax; Kenneth Lewis of Colfax; Kevin Lewis and Beth Gathercole of Colfax; Karla Lewis of Northwood; and Kirk Lewis and his wife Janet of Colfax. Charlie also leaves behind 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William Lewis Jr. and Richard Lewis, two sisters, Maude Lewis and Betty Lewis, one great grandson, Elijah Lewis and one daughter-in-law, Sherri Lewis.
