MSG Retired, James E. Whitson I, 74, of Newton died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 in the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at The Way Church, 2300 S. 3rd Ave. E. in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Donor’s Choice may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Newton; two sons, James E. (Lynnette) Whitson, II, of Newton, and Mike (Angie) Whitson of Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Kim (Juan) Sims of Weaver, Alabama, and Robin (Scott) Symonds of Urbandale; his eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; step father, Dean Boozell of Chariton and many nieces and nephews.

James Whitson was born August 19, 1935.
James served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He continued to serve in the Iowa Army National Guard until retiring in 1988.
James was a graduate of Albia High School in Albia, Iowa in 1952. He had also attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
James was a member of The Way Church, the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, VFW Post 1655, past member of the Jaycees, where he had been the Director of the Soap Box Derby for several years; past Troop Leader of the Cub Scouts, Newton Little League, and of the BaBa Black Sheep Model Airplane Club. He had also been a Junior Achievement Advisor. James loved to be with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, gardening, hunting, and fishing.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Betty of Newton; two sons, James E. (Lynnette) Whitson, II, of Newton, and Mike (Angie) Whitson of Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Kim (Juan) Sims of Weaver, Alabama, and Robin (Scott) Symonds of Urbandale; his eleven grandchildren, Alicia Symonds, Joshua (Tara) Whitson, Ryan Eppling (Johanna Jackson), Jeff Whitson (Lindsay Kuster), Ashley (Chris) Foster, Dylan (Laura) Whitson, Jesse Whitson, Abbie Symonds (Blake Wheeeler), Samantha (Matt) Bennett, Jeremy Whitson, and Aiden Whitson, and five great-grandchildren, Allyssa Moore, Levi Foster, Riley Whitson, Izabella Whitson, and Caisen Foster; step father, Dean Boozell of Chariton and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Eva (Glasford) Whitson; step father, Xavier “X” Lennie; two brothers, John (Martha) Whitson, and Don Whitson; and two sisters, Ruth (Dennis) Wennihan, and a sister in infancy.
Military Honors will be by the Iowa Army National Guard of Johnston, Iowa.
