Mrs. A. H. Sayre, 93, died Saturday afternoon at the home of her son Fred Sayre of infirmities of old age. She had made her home with her son in Colfax the past twenty years.
Jennie E. McCullough Sayre born at Delmont, Pa., July 26, 1860 died at the home of her son, Fred J. Sayre in Colfax, (Iowa), April 10, 1954 at the age of 93 years and 8 months and 15 days.
In 1865, she with her widowed mother and brother, moved to Farmington, Ill., where she lived until 1871, when she moved to a farm between Stuart and Menlo, Iowa. In 1877 she married Albert T. Sayre at Menlo, Iowa, and lived there until 1904, when Mr. Sayre was elected County Treasurer of Guthrie County and they moved to Guthrie Center. To this union were born seven children, four boys and three girls. Two children, Albert D. and Charles H. preceded her in death. Her surviving children are Fred J. of Colfax, Iowa, Ralph M. of Atlantic, Ia.; Mrs. Isabel Miles of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Helen Thompson of Des Moines, Ia.; and Mrs. Paul E. Wylie of Los Angeles, California. Eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grand children also survive her. After the death of her husband, which occurred November 11, 1931, she lived with her daughters until December 1, 1934, when she came to Colfax, Iowa to make her home with her son, Fred, where she resided until her death.
Mrs. Sayre was a member of the Presbyterian church at Guthrie Center and was a faithful attendant as long as she was able to attend services. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, the W.R.C. and Daughters of the American Revolution at Guthrie Center.
During all the years of her last illness, she never complained. She was devoted to her family and friends. She was a loveable woman, intelligent, affectionate and helpful all her life. Deeply religious she lived her religion every day. She put away the burdens of life with the fullest confidence in the certainty of a future life, free from the pain and sorrow of this world.
A dear, good woman has left us the heritage of a beautiful life which we will cherish most tenderly until we shall gather with her in the fullness of time and have her again as our own in God’s paradise that He promises us shall be ours.
Funeral services were held at Guthrie Center, Iowa, April 12, 1954 at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Wilkinson and her remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the Menlo cemetery at Menlo, Iowa.
