Mrs. H. R. Gustafson Killed In Car Crash

Virgil Painter Badly Injured In Auto Accident In Texas-Mexican Is Held For Manslaughter

Body Arrived In Newton Thursday Night Funeral Arrangements Being Made

Mrs. H. R. Gustafson, well-known Newton resident and wife of Dr. Gustafson, dentist, was killed in a motor accident Tuesday morning, near San Benito, Texas, when a car driven by Dr. Gustafson, was struck by an automobile driven by a Mexican.

Virgil Painter, proprietor of the Purity Dairy, Newton, who with Mrs. Painter and Mr. and Mrs. Hess Jasper, were riding in the Gustafson car, was thrown to the pavement and rendered unconscious and suffered a skull fracture and other injuries.

The accident is reported to have occurred on a blind intersection, and was caused when the Newton car was struck by a car driven by a Mexican. The Mexican is being held for manslaughter, according to a telegram received by Newton friends of the stricken families.

Dr. Gustafson left with the body of his wife Wednesday, accompanied by Hess Jasper.

The body of Mrs. Gustafson arrived in Des Moines at 11:30 Thursday night, where the funeral party was met by the Morgan and Son ambulance and brought to Newton.

Funeral arrangements will be made Friday it is understood, and friends of the family were of the opinion that the services would be held Saturday.

Mrs. Jasper remained with Mrs. Painter who was staying with her husband in the Valley Baptist hospital at Harlingen, Texas, near where the accident occurred and which is not far from the ranch of Dr. and Mrs. F. L. Smith, former Newton residents. And Dr. Smith is reported to be taking care of Mr. Painter, who telegraphed Newton friends Wednesday, that the condition of Mr. Painter was not as serious as at first reported.

Mrs. Painter and Mrs. Jasper were staying at the Texas home of Mrs. Howard Snyder, also of Newton.

The party of six left Newton last Thursday for a trip through Texas and then into Old Mexico, stopping enroute at the Hess Jasper fruit ranch which is located in the valley near San Benito.

Mrs. Gustafson came to this city nine years ago from Davenport and was married to Dr. Gustafson February 29, 1932. Four years ago Mrs. Gustafson purchased the White Beauty Salon which is located on the second floor of the Iowa Southern Utilities building. Besides the husband, she is survived by her father, E. L. Cole of Cedar, Iowa, a sister, Mrs. Adrian Krutcher of Cedar and Mrs. Ira Nelson, a half sister of Des Moines.
