R. C. Hammer Died Wednesday Morning

Funeral Services For Former Newton Resident Will Be Held Friday Afternoon

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at three o'clock for Robert C. Hammer, 47, of Ripon, Wis., at the Morgan Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Geo. DeF. Fisher, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Interment will be made in the Newton Union cemetery.

Robert C. Hammer, who died at 6 o'clock Wednesday morning, died in the hospital at Madison, Wis., where he had submitted to an operation for a brain tumor last Saturday, was a former Newton resident. Last summer, Mr. Hammer suffered a nervous breakdown due to overwork.

The remains arrived in Newton Thursday morning accompanied by immediate relatives of the family.

Robert C. Hammer was born southeast of Newton on May 15, 1892 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hammer of Newton. He graduated from the Newton schools and the State University of Iowa at Iowa City.

In March 1919 he began work at the One Minute Washing machine company and was named general manager in 1932, resigning in July, 1935, to go to Ripon, Wisconsin to accept a position with the Speed Queen Washer company, where he was office manager and treasurer at the time of his death.

Before entering the washing machine industry in Newton he was bookkeeper at the Jasper County Savings Bank.

He was united in marriage to Elsie Bergman, daughter of Mrs. Henry G. Bergman of Newton fifteen years ago.

In addition to his widow, other surviving relatives are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hammer of Newton and two sister, Mrs. Cleo Nichols of Newton and Mrs. Edward Clark of Moline, Ill.
