Miss Gertrude Spellman--

Last rites for Miss Gertrude Spellman, former school instructor and lifelong resident of Jasper County, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Hixson Grove chapel with interment in the Slagel cemetery.

Miss Spellman died Saturday evening at her home about four miles east of Newton. She had been in critical condition for some time since suffering a stroke in November.

She was born May 2, 1863, the daughter of Rowley and Laura Eaton Spellman. For some time Miss Spellman taught in the rural schools of the county, but later retire to care for her aging parents. At the time of her death she was making her home with her sister, Ella, and a nephew, Bert Spellman.

Throughout her life she was active in the affairs of the Hixon Grove church, serving as a teacher of Sunday school classes, and in the Missionary society.

She is survived by her sister, Ella, and nephew, Bert. Two sisters preceded her in death.
