Funeral services for J. L. Roberts, 80, retired farmer who had spent the past 20 years in and near Newton, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Prairie City Methodist church with the Rev. R. T. White in charge.

Mr. Roberts died Sunday morning at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines, where he had been confined for the past six weeks. He returned to the Des Moines hospital after suffering a heart attack while spending the winter in Long Beach, Calif.

The body was taken from Des Moines to the Murdoch Funeral home here, where it will lie in state until noon Wednesday.

A member of a pioneer family, Mr. Roberts was born to John and Elizabeth Roberts, Dec. 8, 1859, at Roseville, Ill. He came to Iowa as a lad of 10. After reaching manhood, the deceased acquired a homestead near Prairie City that is now operated by his son, Charles.

Surviving relatives are his widow, the former Mae Riley of Newton; seven children, Mrs. Samuel Blount of Colfax, Mrs. Walter Wilkinson of Marshalltown, Guy Roberts of Des Moines, Willard Roberts of Leon, Wiley, Ralph and Charles Roberts, all of Prairie City; a sister Mrs. S. H. Blount of Des Moines and several grandchildren.
