Freada M. Freeken, 94, of Newton died on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Nelson Manor in Newton.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Harlan Nuss officiating.
The family will greet friends with a coffee time at the funeral home after the memorial service. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Jasper County Historical Society and Museum may be left at the funeral home.
She was the daughter of John and Neva (Edmundson) Eldredge. Freada was born on Nov. 8, 1914, in Sully. She grew up in Sully until the age of 14 when she moved to Newton. She was united in marriage with L.D. “Rennie” Freeken in August of 1936 in Nebraska. After she was married, they farmed northwest of Newton. In 1962, they moved back into town.
A graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1932, Freada was a sales person at the dress shop owned by Helma Cole in the old Maytag Hotel. She was a member of the Jasper County Historical Society, where she was a museum volunteer, 4-H Leader for many years with the Jasper County Extension Council, R.S.V.P. and the Skiff Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Ed) Rozendaal of Newton and Ruth (Arthur) Boyer of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Douglas (Chris) Rozendaal of Clear Lake, Kelley (Siamack) Haghighi of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Kristin (Mark) Gahm of Council Bluffs and David (Deborah) Boyer of Cumming; and nine great-grandchildren.
Freada was preceded in death by her parents; husband, “Rennie” in 1980; one brother; and three sisters.
