McCumber, Fredrick L. Sr. – 1927-2009

Fredrick L. McCumber Sr., 81, of Newton died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Knoxville.
No services are scheduled per family’s request. Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Frank Matson and Verna Ezra (Lutz) McCumber Sr., Fred was born on Sept. 15, 1927, in Newton where he was a lifelong resident. He was united in marriage to Irene Vayle Bogue on March 1, 1950, in Newton.
A 1946 graduate of Newton Senior High School, he worked in tool and dye at the Maytag Company for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He also worked at Moore Tool and Dye and the Newton Daily News. Fred served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Fireman 1st Class. He enjoyed reading, fishing, whittling wood and loved going to family reunions and telling stories. Fred was a member of the UAW Local 997 Retirees Union and the Solid Rock Church.
Survivors include his wife, Irene McCumber of Newton; two sons, Fredrick L. (Elise) McCumber Jr. of Reasnor and David L. (Pam) McCumber of Kellogg; one daughter, Cheryl A. (Mike) Armstrong of What Cheer; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Marion L. (Laura ) McCumber of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; two brothers; and one grandson.
