Ed Brand, 80, of Grinnell died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Stewart officiating. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery. He was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Lynnville to Jacob and Florence Sesler Brand. After graduation from Lynnville High School with the class of 1944 he joined his parents in farming the family farm near Lynnville. He was united in marriage with Betty Buhr on Jan. 5 1950, in Iowa City. Both worked at Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg where Mr. Brand was employed for over 30 years. He then worked in the maintenance department at Grinnell College, retiring in 1992.

The Brands enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, and Mr. Brand traveled to Canada and Minnesota each year to fish with close friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Grinnell as well as the Grinnell Odd Fellows Lodge, the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. He served on the Grinnell City Council for several years, and assisted organizations with his expertise in sign language. He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty and his sister Dorothy Pierce.
