Dorothy Jane Pierce of Avondale, Arizona, formerly of Grinnell, died April 1, 2006, in St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, after suffering a stroke on March 29, 2006. A funeral service was held April 4 in Sun City, Ariz., with the Rev. Marty Neese officiating.

She was born Feb. 21, 1929, in Lynnville, the daughter of Jacob and Forence (Sesler) Brand. She grew up on a farm near Lynnville where she attended school through her junior year of high school. Her family then moved to Grinnell where she attended school and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1947. She then graduated from AIB College of Business in Des Moines which she attended on a basketball scholarship. She was married to Charles Pierce in 1952. They resided in Grinnell where she raised her family and was a long-time employee of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. The Pierces moved to Arizona in 1983 where she enjoyed her church, her backyard swing, feeding her birds and swimming in her pool.

She is survived by three daughters Marcia Jackson of Peoria, Ariz., Sheri Wilkins of Prosser, Wash., and Jody Pierce-Rothermel of Arlington, Ariz.; four sons, Steve of Roseburg, Oregon, Rod of Redmond Wash., Jon of Sacramento, Ca., and Curt of Williams, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and one brother, Ed Brand of Grinnell.She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
