Pitz, Robert Lee – 1937-2009

Robert Lee Pitz, the son of Virgil and Madonna Greene Pitz, was born on Nov. 20, 1937, in Charles City. Bob served his country in the U. S. Army. On Sept. 1, 1978, Bob was united in marriage with Rosalee June Thompson.
Bob enjoyed staying busy. He had worked for the railroad, for the News Printing Company as a printer, for Riverview Release Center as a correctional officer, for Mannats as a truck driver, as a school bus driver and for the Maytag Company on assembly. Bob enjoyed animal and bird watching. He was an avid outdoorsman spending much time on his own during his many walks through the woods. He hunted, fished, canoed and collected arrowheads. Bob was also an artist, creating many wonderful pieces over the years.
Bob died from lung cancer on July 4, 2009, at the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was 71 years old.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy, Roberta; a son, Michael Pitz; and his two brothers, Larry Pitz and Jerome Pitz.
Those left to honor Bob’s memory include his wife, Rosalee Thompson of Kellogg; his daughters, Lori (Dewayne) Cody of Chesapeake, Va., and Julie (Charles) Dockendorf of Elma; his sons, James Pitz and his fiancé, Lisa of Charles City and Garth (Amy) Bock of Mt. Pleasant; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Xavier Ellis, Jason Funk, Michelle and Shawn Moody (Tanner, Faith, Blane), Nicholas Dockendorf, Nathan Dockendorf, Ashley Dockendorf (Rylan), Gavin Brock; his four nieces and one nephew; and Rosalee’s many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews including, Paula and Doug McVey (Vanessa, Moriah, Amanda), Emily and Joe Halberstat (Zachary, Grace), Perry Jr. and Laurie Thompson (Jonathon, Melaney).
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Memorials may be designated in Bob’s name or to Hospice of Jasper County.
