KELLOGG – Walter A. Henning, 75, Box 245, Kellogg, a lifelong resident of the Kellogg and Newton communities and mayor of Kellogg for six years, died today, Feb. 12, at the Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.
The Rev. Robert Hinshaw, pastor of the Ashton Chapel, north of Mingo, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Mamie, three sons, Roy J. of Newton, Kenneth of College Station, Tex., and Donald D. of Kellogg; a daughter, Mrs. Luella I. Banks of Silvis, Ill., 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Ted Henning of Colfax; and a sister, Elsie Hasselbrink of Grinnell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, August, Fred, Ed, Albert and Carl, two sisters, Lena and Emma, and two grandchildren.
Mr. Henning was a past member of the Red Men Lodge and a member of UAW, Local 997 Retirees Union.
A Maytag employee for 43 years until retiring May 21, 1972, he had farmed in the Kellogg community.
The son of August F. and Frederica Saak Henning, he was born Jan. 26, 1920 at Newton and was educated in Newton schools.
He was married to Mamie Schermerhorn Dec. 21, 1929 in Toledo.
