Hammons, Dixie D. – 1935-2009

Dixie D. Hammons, of Newton, the daughter of Buel and Jessie Harville Copeland, was born on Dec. 8, 1935, in Fair Play, Mo. Dixie graduated from Fair Play High School with the class of 1953. She moved to Newton in 1954. Dixie devoted her life to her family. She always enjoyed cooking for the family, desiring to care for them however she could. Dixie enjoyed the outdoors, driving about town and her dogs.
Dixie died on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center. She was 73 years old.
Dixie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bobby L. Copeland in 1992.
Those left to honor Dixie’s memory include her sons, Randall R. Hammons on Newton and Doug Watkins of Utah; her daughters, Sharon R. Hammons of Newton and Cynthia L. Balmer Hammons of Sully; her four grandchildren; her four great-grandchildren; her sister, Luella Collins of Marshfield, Mo.; and her many friends.
Memorial services will be on Monday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. (Interment: Sugar Grove (Metz) Cemetery, Newton, IA)
Memorials may be designated in Dixie’s name and left at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home.
