Valeria Man Killed When Hit by Train
Chase Harold Wagner, 36, of Valeria, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon about 1:30 by a Great Western freight train at a private crossing on the John O’Roake farm a half mile west of Valeria.
According to reports, Mr. Wagner had gone hunting and apparently sat down at the crossing and fell asleep with his dog beside him.The train was pulling up a grade at that point at a fairly low rate of speed, when the crew members reported seeing an object on the track. They saw the dog jump up and awaken Wagner. They tried to stop the train and Wagner tried to get off the track but it was too late. The dog was not hit.
Mr. Wagner was a carpenter by trade and was employed by a contractor at Mingo.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Neal Wagner, one son Wayne, 16 years of age, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wagner, Valeria, 2 brothers, Clell and Theodore of Valeria, 2 half brothers, Wilder and Raymond Wagner of Colfax, five sisters, Mrs. Mollie Atkinson of Valeria, Mrs. Mary Miller, Des Moines, Mrs. Bessie Simbro, Monroe, Mrs. Stella Poulson, Cedar Falls and Mrs. Nellie Bowers of Monroe.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Bumgardner Funeral Home at 2 o’clock, with Rev. Bernard Waage, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating.
Music was provided by Miss Mable Kaldenberg, soloist and Mrs. F. B. Evans, pianist. The flower committee was Mrs. Helen Owens and Mrs. Clifford Gearhart.
Pallbearers were Bill Norton, Clifford Gearhart, Charles O’Roake, Dent Cummings, Sam Beals and Lester Shaffer.
Interment was in the Vandalia cemetery at Vandalia, Iowa
