MARSHALLTOWN — Ellen R. Thompson Gummert, 97, of Marshalltown, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ellen Thompson was born on Jan. 28, 1912, at home south of Laurel in Jasper County. She was the daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth (Ceaser) Thompson. She attended school in Jasper County and Marshalltown, graduating from Marshalltown High School. She received her bachelor of science from Iowa State University and her master of science from Drake University.
In 1946, Ellen married Leo Gummert in Marshalltown. The couple later divorced.
Ellen worked as a home economics teacher for 42 years, working at Van Cleve, Jamaica, Albion, LeGrand, Monroe and Newton, where she spent her last 26 years of teaching. She also was Director of School Lunches at Newton. After teaching, she worked at Wal-Mart in the stationery department for 15 years, retiring in 1999.
She enjoyed sewing and babysitting her great-grandchildren. Ellen lived on a farm south of Marshalltown until moving into town in 1992. In April, she moved to Villa del Sol.
Ellen is survived by her two grandchildren, Dana Eller of Iowa City and Diara (Zac) Olson of Marshalltown; her two great-grandchildren, Taylor Olson and Jayden Eller, both of Marshalltown; her granddogs, Ella, Bubba and Duke; her special friend, Judy Smith of Garwin; and several nieces and nephews, including one special niece, JoAnn Struebing.
In death, she has rejoined her parents; her daughter, Marjorie Olson; her twin sons in infancy; her sister; her four brothers; and her son-in-law, Robert Olson.
