Lester E. Davis, 92, of Newton died Monday, June 1, 2009, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Lewis Flanigan of Colo officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Slagel Cemetery in rural Newton.
Memorials to the Pleasant View United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home.
Born to Charles H. and A. Alta (Simpson) Davis on March 9, 1917, in rural Newton, Lester was a lifelong resident of Buena Vista Township in rural Newton. He was united in marriage to Berniece C. Enquist on March 12, 1939, in Des Moines.
Lester was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1933. He was a farmer and had worked 29 years as a production worker for Maytag Company when he retired.
Lester was a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church, UAW Local 997 Retiree’s Union, Newton Elks, Moose Lodge 923, Jasper County Farm Bureau, American Polled Hereford Association, Newton Cardinal Booster Club, Jasper County I Club, Stylists music group, Maytag Men’s Bowling League and Jasper County Men’s Bowling League. Lester enjoyed bowling, and he bowled in the Iowa Senior Olympics.
He enjoyed the friendship and companionship spent with his dog, Buddy. Lester loved having his family around, especially his 10 grandsons and their families.
Survivors include his son, David (Nancy) Davis of Cumming; his daughters, Diane (Murry) Dammeier and Shirleyanne (Chuck) Wagoner, all of Newton; 10 grandsons; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Gladys Davis and Dorothy Davis, both of Newton.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Berniece in 2001; and three brothers, Leonard, Frank and Harold Davis.
