J. M. McQuiston Died in Yakima, Wash, Hospital
Long Time Resident of Colfax; Carpenter and Contractor; Funeral at Yakima Tuesday
James Martin McQuiston, 95, retired carpenter of this city, died Saturday morning at a hospital in Yakima, Washington. Mr. McQuiston had entered the hospital December 28th, 1949, after a fall in which his hip was fractured. He had suffered considerably, especially the past week and death came as a relief to his suffering. He had gone to Yakima with his wife in the fall to remain for a while in the home of their daughter, Mrs. C. S. Sharp at 1910 East Lenox, in that city.
Mr. McQuiston was born March 18th, 1885 near Iowa City, Iowa, and celebrated his 95th birthday just a week prior to his death. He was a carpenter by trade, working at the contracting business his entire lifetime.
On March 8th, 1883, he was united in marriage to Sarah Ellen Palmer at Esbon, Kansas, and in 1885 moved to Colfax. They resided here until 1901 and then went west to Colorado where they lived for ten years. They returned to Colfax in 1912 which place has been their home continuously since.
They were the parents of ten children, eight of whom with the good wife and mother survive. They are Mrs. M. A. Binkerd and Charles and Robert McQuiston of Colfax, Will McQuiston of Cedar Rapids, Ernest McQuiston of Delta, Colo., Mrs. C. S. Sharp and Nick McQuiston of Yakima, Wash., and Mrs. O. E. Goodman of Madrid. Two sons preceded him in death.
Mr. and Mrs. McQuiston celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary March 8th. Up until the time of his accident both Mr. and Mrs. McQuiston were interested in all current happenings and lived in their own home in Colfax until going to Washington. Mr. McQuiston erected many of the homes in Colfax as well as doing much remodeling in the residence and business sections through the years.
Funeral services were held at Yakima, Washington Tuesday afternoon with crematory following. The ashes will be returned to Colfax for burial at a later date.
