Toney, James Walter – 1866-1951

James Walter Toney, the son of Walter and Lette Toney, was born at Charlottesville, Virginia, March 18, 1866 and departed from this life in Colfax, Iowa, Tuesday, September 25th at his home, 424 South Oak Park, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 7 days.
He came to Evans, Iowa as a young man and worked in the mines for a number of years.
On May 5th, 1900 he was married to Mary Edmonds in Evans, Iowa. To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Gerald Madison in Des Moines, Iowa.
He worked for a number of years in Buxton, then moved to Enterprise and later moved to Colfax in 1916. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church until it closed, serving as a deacon for 35 years. He was loyal to the post and always on hand at every meeting, doing what he could for the upbuilding of the church. At the time of his death he was a member of the Colfax Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his wife, Mrs. Mary Toney.
He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. Gerald Madison with whom he made his home, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the Bumgardner Funeral Chapel Sept. 28th with the Rev. Bernard Waage, officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Alfred Tobias, soloist and Mrs. Geo. Rinker, pianist.
Pallbearers were Walter Madison, John Madison, Horace Coles, Royal Madison and Jessie Anderson.
Burial was in the Colfax cemetery.
