John T. Fryer, 85, of Newton died on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at his home in Park Centre in Newton.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of the Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 28, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the veteran’s section of Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, John’s family requests memorials be left to the Park Centre Good Samaritan Fund or to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
The son of John H. “Jack” and Cecylle V. (Kelly) Fryer, he was born on Aug. 10, 1923, in Churchville. John had lived in Newton since 1950. He was united in marriage to Pauline “Pat” Anderson on Aug. 5, 1967, in Newton.
John was a graduate of Martinsdale High School in Martinsdale, class of 1941. He was the department head of automated machining for 36 plus years for the Maytag Company, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111 and of the VFW Post 1655, both in Newton. John served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his son, Thomas J. “TJ” (Sandra) Fryer of Carrollton, Texas; his sister, Florene Evans of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pat in 2006; and brother-in-law, R. Edward Evans.
