Shaffer, Loraine ‘Shafe’ – 1918-2009

Loraine E. “Shafe” Shaffer, 90, of Newton, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m Friday, March 27, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with Pastor Syd McCrorey officiating. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials to the Jasper County Fair Board may be left at the funeral home.
Loraine was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Reasnor, the son of Bernard and Goldie (Gunsaulas) Shaffer.
On March 15, 1941, he married Lucille Snook in Green Mountain.
Shafe was a lifelong farmer, retiring in 1975. In the 1960s, he also worked at Winpower Mfg. He also drove a school bus for the Newton schools for 20 years.
He was a Farm Bureau member since 1942, 4-H leader of Wildcat Boosters 4-H Club for 15 years and an honorary member of Newton FFA. He also served on the Jasper County Fair Board for 27 years and served many years as the show ring announcer for the Jasper County Fair. He was a member of the Wittemberg Church and had attended Community Heights Alliance Church.
Survivors include one son, Con (Pam) Shaffer of Ames; three grandchildren, Robin (Jerry) Lilienthal of Newton, Chris (Leigh) Shaffer of San Diego, Calif., and Ty Shaffer of Surprise, Ariz.; five great-grandchildren, Jonah and Lucille “Lucy” Lilienthal of Newton, Sebastian Shaffer of Surprise, Ariz., and Kai and Keanu Shaffer of San Diego, Calif.; one brother, Don (Colleen) Shaffer of San Francisco, Calif.; four nephews and one niece; and one special friend, Grace Sears of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille, in 1982; brother Lester; sister Mozelle; and one niece.
