Ernest F. “Ernie” Kastner, 87, of Newton died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1115 S. Eighth Ave. E. in Newton, with Father William Reynolds officiating. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in rural Newton.
In lieu of flowers, Ernie’s family requests memorials be given to Hospice of Jasper County. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the funeral mass.
The son of Frank and Emily (Biedermann) Kastner, Ernie was born March 7, 1922, in rural Yale, Iowa. He was a graduate of Panora High School in Panora, Iowa, in 1940. On March 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Vaundeen M. Pack in Wichita, Kan.
Ernie was a production worker 34 years for the Maytag Company. When he retired in 1981, he worked in dryer assembly.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, UAW Local 997 Retirees Union, a one gallon member of the American Red Cross and a delivery volunteer for Congregate Meals. Ernie enjoyed woodworking, fishing, camping, gardening, yard work, birdhouses and reading westerns. He had lived in Newton for 62 years.
Survivors include his wife, Vaundeen of Newton; two sons, Don (Shirley) Kastner of Blaine, Minn., and James (Annetta) Kastner of Newton; a daughter, Helen Richard of Newton; eight grandchildren, Eric Richard of Mankato, Minn., Amatullah (Colleen) Richard of Coralville, Iowa, Tony Kastner of Blaine, Minn., Tracy (Josh) Stai of Kalona, Iowa, DJ Kastner of Newton, Gwendolyn Bennett of Marion, Ill., Connie Bennett of Evansville, Ind., Broderick Miller of Marion, Ill.; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Francis (Lila) Kastner, Herman (Rita) Kastner and Joseph (Jan) Kastner; and a sister, Helen Richey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Carl, Alfred and Paul Kastner.
