Betson, Max ‘Toby’ – 1934-2009

Max “Toby” Betson, 74, of Monroe died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Pella Hospital in Pella.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Mystic, Iowa.
Memorials in Max’s name may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Richard H. and Martha Frances “Fannie” (Richmond) Betson, Max was born Aug. 14, 1934, in Mystic, where he grew up. On Sept. 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Elaine Link in Mystic.
In April of 1957, Max and Elaine moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where they lived for 35 years. In 1997, they moved to Monroe, Iowa. He worked in the laundry department at Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1976, and served in the National Guard from 1953 to 1957. Max enjoyed NASCAR, fishing and his John Deere lawnmower.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Betson of Monroe; aunt, Betty Betson of Monmouth, Ill.; and nephew, Richie Carins of Centerville, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill Betson; a sister, Dixie Carins; and a nephew, Terry Carins.
