MONROE — Ralph H. Van Wyk, 81, of Monroe died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services for Mr. Van Wyk will be held on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at the Monroe Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. with burial following at Gifford Cemetery.
Visitation for Mr. Van Wyk will be held on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at the Monroe Presbyterian Church from 2 to 6 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Monroe Emergency Unit or the Monroe Recreation Park. Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Joan A. Van Wyk of Monroe; four children, Sharon K. Miller and her husband, Dwight, of Fremont, James L. Van Wyk and his wife, Marla, of Brownwood, Texas, Denise J. Van Wyk of Des Moines and Janice M. Davis and her husband, Tom, of Monroe; two sisters, Bonnie Sloan and her husband, Frank, of Runnells and Elaine Reeves and her husband, Bernie, of Monroe; one brother-in-law, Clarence Frazier of Clive; 11 grandchildren; four grandchildren-in-law; four great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild arriving in July.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Phyllis Frazier.

The son of Ben and Irma Nelle (Honnold) Van Wyk, Ralph was born on January 13, 1928 at Monroe. Ralph was a graduate of Monroe High School, class of 1946. On October 5, 1947, Ralph was united in marriage with Joan A. Prunty at the Monroe Presbyterian Church. Ralph was a lifelong resident of Monroe where he was a farmer and the sole proprietor of Van Wyk Construction. Ralph will be remembered for his love of family and his strong work ethic. He enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting. In his younger years, Ralph was a member of the Percy Softball Team. Ralph served as a school board member and president of the New Monroe Community School District. Ralph volunteered his time and talents for many community projects, including but not limited to, the Monroe Elementary School playground, Habitat for Humanity, and the Monroe Presbyterian Church. Ralph was a member of the Monroe Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and on numerous church boards.
