Mabel H. McConeghey, 97, of Newton died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the First Christian Church, 314 E. Second St. N. in Newton. The Rev. Mark Young will officiate.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the church. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
Memorials to the First Christian Church or to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the church at the times of the visitation and service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, which is in charge of arrangements.
The daughter of George W. and Sarah Lily (Clouse) Leck, Mabel was born Jan. 11, 1912, in Mendota, Mo. A graduate of Friendship School in Mendota, she had lived in Newton since the early 1940s.
She was united in marriage to R. Wayne McConeghey on Feb. 18, 1933, in Missouri.
Mabel was a homemaker and worked 10 years for Dunlap Manufacturing, retiring in 1978. She was a member of First Christian Church, Opal Circle, Jasper County Historical Society and was a volunteer at the Jasper County Historical Museum. Mabel enjoyed going on trips with the Senior Clubs at her bank.
Survivors include two daughters, Carole (Bill) Soutter of Des Moines and Joyce (William “Bill”) Guthrie of Newton; one son, Tom (Jennifer) McConeghey of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Paula (Dan) Sjullie of Des Moines, Lisa Van Scoyk of Polk City, Deborah (Brad) Van Soelen of Monroe, Jeffery (Kristin) Guthrie of Decatur, Ga., Eric (Jane) Guthrie of Boulder, Colo., Kristen Guthrie of Waterloo, Ryan Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, John McConeghey of Columbus, Ohio, and Ryan Colburn of Ames; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, R. Wayne in 1977; six sisters, Nola, Kate, Mamie, Bessie, Tina and Virginia; and two brothers, Ralph and Roy.
