Wiltbank, Scottie Annetta

A Sadly Bereaved Home

It was a sad shock to the many friends of Miss Nettie Wiltbank, when it became known Tuesday morning that she had died the evening before at her home just north of this city. The news of her death was to nearly everybody the first intimation that she was not in her usual health. On the Wednesday evening previous she had attended the wedding of her friend, Miss Jessie Bigelow, and was one of the happiest of the many young people present on that joyous occasion. She took a slight cold on that evening, but suffered no inconvenience from it until Sunday evening, when she suddenly became quite ill with pneumonia, from which she died, about 5 o’clock, Monday evening.

Scottie Annetta Wiltbank was the daughter of J. W. Wiltbank. She was born September 21, 1861, near Baxter, in this county, and came to the present home near Newton in December 1874. She has been a member of the M. E. Church since July 1884 – a faithful and consistent Christian at all times and under all circumstances. Just one year ago, Oct. 9th, her mother died, since which time Nettie had been the solace and main stay of her aged father and youngest brother Frank, in the home darkened by the death of the aged wife and mother. She did her part, and the hearts of all her loved ones are rendered doubly desolate by her sudden death. Her age was 34 years.

The funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday, at 11 a. m., conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan, and attended by a large number of sorrowing friends. The relatives from abroad were J. L. Masten and wife, James Masten and L. W. Wiltbank, of Adair County, and Mrs. S. Porter and son Charles, of Guthrie County. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to father Wiltbank and Frank in the great sorrow that has again come upon them. ~ The Newton Record, Friday, October 11, 1895, Page 10, column 1
