Mrs. Callison Dies at Age 74, Rites Tuesday

Mrs. Elton C. Callison (Nelle May Palmer), 74, who lived on a farm northeast of Newton, died Saturday night at Skiff memorial Hospital from complications following surgery last Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock at Morgan Funeral Home with Rev. e. A. Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Callison was a life-long resident of Jasper County. She was born Nelle Palmer on March 23, 1877, to George and Martha Cory Palmer on a farm near Monroe.

She received her early education in the country schools, attended Newton Normal College and Simpson College after which she taught in Monroe and rural schools. In 1905 she graduated as a nurse from the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines which profession she followed until her marriage to Elton C. Callison in Monroe on Feb. 15, 1906.

Mrs. Callison became a member of the Methodist church in early childhood. She was affiliated with the W.S.C.S., the Berry Circle, Friends’ Center Missionary society and the Busy Bees.

Mrs. Callison is survived by her husband, one son, Donald C. of Des Moines; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Chipps and Mrs. Annette Chipps, both of Monroe. Her parents, two brothers, Arthur and John, and one sister, Mrs. L. N. Mateer, preceded her in death.

Pallbearers at the service will be Ivan Hinshaw, Raymond Bunker, Cliff Clemens, Clarence Baldwin, Roy Hagedorn and LeRoy Harris. Mrs. Ivan Hinshaw, Mrs. Glenn Bunker and Mrs. J. C. Clemens will comprise the flower committee. (Died August 11, 1951)
