John R. “Bob” Taylor, 79, of Newton, died on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center officiating.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials in John’s name may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Ed. M. and Dollie (Gearhart) Taylor, John was born on Feb. 8, 1929, in Baxter. He grew up in Baxter and Missouri, attending school in both areas. He was united in marriage to Verna Dean Meadows.
John worked in construction. Later, owned and operated The Mint bar in Newton with his wife, Verna. He was a member of the VFW Post 1655. He enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by one daughter, Becky (Murray) Barge of Monroe; seven grandchildren, Tom (Tami) Stoner, Travis (Amanda) McConnell, Preston (Sarah) McConnell, all of Newton, Marty McConnell of Monroe, Nikki (Manuel) Vasquez, Tanya (Robert Wince) McConnell, all of Newton and Shelly Taylor; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, the Allspach family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna; and son, Mike Taylor.
