William H. “Bill” Van Arkel, 83, of Newton died on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton with the Rev. AaronLoree of the First Baptist Church in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County may be left at the church on the morning of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
The son of Peter and Trina (Van Sant) Van Arkel, he was born on June 14, 1925, in Sully. Bill was a lifelong resident of the Newton area. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Van Zee on Sept. 17, 1947, in New Holland, S.D.
In his early years, Bill farmed, and he later worked for several farm implement dealers. He also worked for True Value. He was a Charter member of the Christian Reformed Church in Newton. Bill loved being with his grandsons, he enjoyed fishing, baseball and going to his family’s activities.
Survivors include his daughter, Rhonda (Scott) Morrill of Altoona; his son, Robert (Kim) Van Arkel of Newton; and his two grandchildren, Adam and Ryan Van Arkel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, in 2007; and sister, Patricia Mae Van Wyk.
