MARSHALLTOWN — Bruce Walker, 54, of Marshalltown, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 6, 2008, at his home while in the care of his loving family and Iowa River Hospice.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dick Sipe officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the church. For condolences to the family, visit www.mitchellfh.com.
The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Bruce and his family.
Born on July 29, 1954, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Stan and Mary (Welker) Walker. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School in 1972, attended MCC before receiving his degree from UNI and his master’s degree from Drake in Des Moines. He was a school counselor with the Marshalltown Community School District for the past 19 years. Previously he worked as a teacher and counselor in the Wellsburg, Colo-NESCO, and Paton-Churdan School Districts. He also was a past-president and member of the Iowa School Counseling Association and member of the Marshalltown Community Y Outreach Committee.
Mr. Walker was a faithful member and past deacon of the First Baptist Church and was devoted in serving his ministry through music in the worship team as their drummer. He was an avid tennis player, devoted husband and wonderful father to his two young sons. He will be greatly missed by many.
Left to treasure his memory are Ruth (Obersteller) whom he married on Aug. 3, 1991, in Newton; sons, Andrew, 11, and Aaron, 9; brother Lon (Donna) and their son Richard of Mannheim, Germany, brother Paul Walker of Wilton; father and mother-in-law Heinrich and Mary Obersteller of Newton; sisters-in-law Meta (Dana) Gowin of Altoona and their daughters Cierra and Aurora; Monica Obersteller and her children Jenna and Jordan of Savage, Minn.; and several cousins.
In death he has rejoined his parents and aunt, Erma Forrester.
